There are many different kinds of locksets that can be used on different types of doors. The “passage” lockset or a privacy lock is generally used on interior doors like a bathroom or bedroom door for household use. Locksets for exterior doors may be called entry locksets or keyed operated locks, which generally include deadbolts.

Mortise locks have a large, rectangular body that slides into the mortise cut, which is on the door's edge. With most mortise locks the lockset has a deadbolt interconnected with the mortise lock. Mortise locks are a popular type of lock for exterior doors because on the interconnecting deadbolt and the security they provide.
